The dress code at City School of the Arts reflects our learning philosophy: we provide a clear structure within which self-expression can flourish.
CSA’s dress code serves three main purposes:
1. Unifying us as an artistic and intellectual community, while
2. Fulfilling the daily functional needs of CSA students comfortably, and
3. Removing unnecessary distractions, so students can focus on academic and artistic pursuits
Tops
Students are required to wear a CSA uniform top (t-shirt or long sleeved shirt) to school every day, (unless otherwise approved by a CSA Staff Member). All parts of a student's stomach and back must be covered. CSA uniform tops are available online at Student Styles, link below. Uniform scholarships are available to any family who requests it; please contact the main office with inquiries.

Sweatshirts; No Coats or Jackets During The Day
Students may wear a CSA uniform sweatshirt/CSA Track Jacket over their CSA uniform top for warmth, but only CSA uniform sweatshirts/track jackets will be permitted. If a student is not wearing CSA-uniform outerwear, it will be confiscated until the end of the day. Students are expected to store all non-uniform coats and jackets in their lockers during the school day.
Bottoms
Students may wear any color or style pants, shorts, or skirt, including athletic wear and jeans. Bottoms may not be mesh, or translucent. Shorts and skirts need to be long enough to remain comfortable throughout sitting in classes and fitness activities. Revealing clothing that does not provide full coverage of private body parts are not permitted.
Shoes
Students may not wear open toed or backless shoes, including flip flops or slides, as they present a serious safety hazard for students. Crocs must be worn in sports mode. Students may not wear high heels exceeding one inch. Sneakers are encouraged, particularly on days when students have Fitness.
Other
Hats, caps, and other head coverings, such as durags, are not allowed, except for religious observance. Non-religious hats and other head coverings will be confiscated until the end of the day;
Jewelry is permitted but may not have logos, lights, motors, or any feature that may cause classroom distractions. Appropriateness of jewelry shall be at the discretion of the Director of School Community and Culture;
Offensive attire, including backpacks, are not permitted at CSA. “Offensive” includes, but is not limited to:
◦ Vulgar pictures, words, or drawings;
◦ Promotion or advertisement of products that are sexually related or illegal for minors (tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc.);
◦ Promotion or advertisement of products that are inappropriate for minors; and
◦ Profanity or prejudicial language.
Additional notes:
• Students must not bring their own laptops, iPads or other tablets, Nintendo Switches, or other personal electronics to school. These items are also a distraction and can be lost, damaged, or stolen.
City School of the Arts reserves the right to add or amend this dress code as needed at the discretion of the Director of School Community and Culture. Our aim is to make CSA a safe, inclusive community free from distractions to our students’ progress toward their academic, artistic, and personal goals.
